At Billingshurst Primary Academy, our Religious Education curriculum enables every child to explore religion and worldviews with curiosity, confidence, and respect. Pupils encounter Christianity alongside a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, learning how beliefs shape individuals, communities, and cultures.

Shaped by our core values, the curriculum encourages ambition through meaningful questions and precise vocabulary. It fosters belonging by helping pupils understand their own identity while valuing diversity, and builds courage by providing a safe environment to explore challenging ideas and listen to different perspectives.

Pupils develop key skills through enquiry, discussion, and reflection. They learn to interpret texts, compare practices, evaluate sources, and support conclusions with evidence, while cultivating empathy, critical thinking, and respectful disagreement.

Learning progresses clearly across the academy:

  • Early Years: Exploring special people, places, and celebrations through play and talk.

  • Key Stage 1: Building foundational knowledge of key beliefs, symbols, and practices.

  • Key Stage 2: Deepening understanding, analyzing sources, and exploring how beliefs shape moral choices and responses to life's big questions.

By revisiting concepts, pupils build a coherent body of knowledge and an appreciation of diversity. They leave prepared to participate thoughtfully in a diverse society with the ambition to learn, a sense of belonging, and the courage to act with compassion.
