At Billingshurst Primary Academy, the teaching of History reflects our school values of Ambition, Belonging and Courage, and aims to develop curious learners who leave primary school with the skills to further develop as historians. History is taught progressively through discrete and cross-curricular lessons in which children are taught the key content knowledge and skills using the Kapow Progression scheme. These content areas and skills are split into two main strands: ‘Substantive knowledge’ and ‘Disciplinary knowledge’. These main strands embed a further five historical strands: topic knowledge, chronological awareness, substantive concepts, enquiry and disciplinary concepts.
In History lessons, we enhance children’s love for learning by providing learning hooks, immersions and authentic experiences, making history exciting and purposeful for all children. Excellent outcomes for all children are planned for using the Kapow progression, which supports teachers to make necessary adaptations and carefully consider scaffolds, reflecting our fully inclusive curriculum and core ABC values. Equality and diversity within our History curriculum is of the highest priority as we work to decolonise and diversify our curriculum; lessons include information and recounts from a diverse range of historical figures, and key historical events (such as Black History Month and Remembrance Day) are celebrated across school. History at Billingshurst Primary Academy also offers many Oracy opportunities, promoting an inclusive learning environment where every child has a voice to express their ideas and are encouraged to develop their independence, share their views and be challenged.
