Welcome to Year 5 at Billingshurst Primary Academy!
Throughout the year, we have many exciting topics planned and plenty of enriching opportunities within our curriculum.
In Autumn Term, we start our Year 5 History Journey chronologically by beginning with Ancient Greeks. We also will be considering the link between heroes in Ancient Greek mythology and those who are heroic in our community, with visits from locals, who keep our village a safe and wonderful place to live. In the second half term, we will be expanding our European knowledge by focusing on the Alps. We will also be linking our locational topic with our DT Cooking and Nutrition project!
In Spring Term, we will be starting the new year with our Vikings topic, developing our questioning and analytical skills as Historians. Following that, we will be looking at our world’s Oceans and just how important they are to so many aspects of life itself.
Finally in Summer Term, we will be delving into the extreme biome of Deserts in Geography and the vast, mysterious expanse of Space in Science and in the last half term together, we will be studying The Tudors for our final History topic.
As a school, we are incredibly passionate about reading. In Year 5, we would expect children to be reading for at least 30 minutes a day at home; this can be independently or with an adult and can be using a variety of texts, such as Newsround articles or even recipe books as they help cook tea. Additionally, we have an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books at school that children are welcome to borrow to read at home.
Following Year 4’s MTC, we will continue to prioritise the fast and accurate recall of times table facts up to 12x12, as this will support children in their Maths lessons throughout their education.
We will also be learning spelling rules (and, as it’s the English language, exceptions to those rules) each week, with weekly spelling tests. New spellings will be sent home on Fridays and children will have the opportunity to consolidate previously learnt patterns, in addition to the new Year 5/6 rules and common exception words.
We, as the Year 5 team, are thrilled to be working with your children this year and look forward to making this a wholly enjoyable and memorable experience for them.
