We know that developing a child's love for reading is incredibly beneficial for their development, well-being and academic achievement across the curriculum. At Billingshurst Primary Academy, time is given for all children to celebrate and discover new books, share their personal reading experiences and read regularly with adults and their peers.
Learning to read and reading for pleasure are incredibly important to us and our curriculum is designed to teach and celebrate both. Early reading is key for our youngest children and helping them to develop into confident and skilled readers is of the highest priority in their earliest school years.
Once children are able to decode, our reading lessons provide opportunities for them to practice and develop their fluency and ability to read accurately and with automaticity and prosody so that they are able to read for meaning and pleasure. Our curriculum is driven by quality texts, making sure all children are exposed to a wide range of supportive, diverse, interesting and enjoyable books throughout their school journey, which help to enhance their learning.
Phonics
We follow the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme which enables children to work systematically through their sounds. This is matched with phonetically appropriate reading books.
