At Billingshurst Primary Academy, we believe that every child should have a voice and feel confident in expressing themselves through their writing. We want our children to see themselves as writers and our approach is designed to provide opportunities for children to write for authentic purposes, both real and imagined. Children immerse themselves in the 'world' of their writing, practising key grammatical techniques, building their vocabulary and planning their final pieces. Teachers facilitate this by providing a range of stimuli, from music, images, art, trips and visitors, all aimed at equipping our children to write well for their purpose and audience.
We want children to be able to be ambitious and write confidently and effectively for different purposes and audiences, understanding how they can achieve their desired impact on their audience and recognising and selecting the right vocabulary and grammar to achieve this. We use Emilie Education for our Spelling and Grammar resources, following the National Curriculum progression as part of our Writing lessons.
Drawing Club - EYFS
At Billingshurst Primary Academy, we understand the importance of looking at high quality texts, and how these are fundamental for developing a love of reading and writing. Drawing club enables children, in their earliest stages of writing, to develop a love of books and their imagination. We immerse the children in texts which both adults and children love, enhancing their understanding of what makes a good story. Through drawing club, the children learn new vocabulary, are shown how to use it and then unleash their imaginations to create their own drawings. These are enhanced with secret codes, letters and numbers. This focus on imagination and freedom to create gives the children great pride and ownership over their work.
