Welcome from the Year 2 Team!

In Year 2, we encourage your children to develop their independence by taking greater responsibility for their learning. This helps to prepare them to become lifelong learners. Independence and resilience are recognised, encouraged and celebrated throughout the year.

During the year, the children will build on their previous learning and develop new skills through a creative and broad curriculum. Skills are taught through a range of exciting themes and topics, including the history of schools in A Moment in Time, coasts in Land Ahoy!, and knights and castles in Towers, Turrets and Tournaments.

We believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. The children will have opportunities to enhance their learning in our outdoor environment, where they can access a wide range of resources to spark their curiosity, develop their skills and reinforce learning from the classroom.

During the second half of the year, Year 2 will take part in Forest School. This provides the children with opportunities to explore, create, take appropriate risks, develop their independence and learn about the natural world.

Activities may include:

• Nature-based crafts

• Den building

• Fire lighting

• Campfire activities and outdoor cooking, including marshmallows, soup and toast

• Using tools, whittling and woodworking

• Exploring and discovering nature

• Learning about local wildlife and habitats

Reading

Your child will bring home a Read Write Inc. book every Friday, and you will receive a link to an online text each week. These texts are linked to the books your child is reading in class.

We encourage all children to read their books more than once during the week, as repeated reading helps to develop fluency, understanding and comprehension skills.

Your child will also have the opportunity to bring home a reading-for-pleasure book. These books are chosen for children to enjoy sharing with their grown-ups at home.

As the children progress through our Read Write Inc. scheme, they may become free readers. At this stage, they will be supported in choosing their own texts and developing their independence as readers.
