Welcome to Year 1!
The teachers are Mrs Hampson / Miss Jolley (Year Leader), Mrs Tonkinson and Miss Alford, supported by Mrs Wilks, Mrs Gold, Mrs Dewell, Mrs Casagrande, Mrs Molla and Mr Tickner.
A smooth transition from Reception to Year One is one of our priorities in the Autumn term as this provides the children with a positive start the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum.
Teaching and learning and assessment takes different forms throughout the day; new ideas and concepts are introduced during regular inputs where the children are involved in age appropriate discussions, handle various manipulatives and artefacts and practice new skills whilst being guided by the teacher. The children are then challenged and supported through either 1:1 sessions, small group work or independent activities depending on their needs. Our classroom environments are carefully planned to inspire the children’s learning through our topics. Our provision is set up to encourage child initiated learning, role play experiences and opportunities to learn through play.
We want the children to take ownership of their learning, therefore we spend time each lesson providing in the moment feedback. This is when we discuss the children’s learning, their areas of strength and how can they improve next time.
We have a wonderful environmental area which we utilise throughout the curriculum as much as we can. The children will all have an opportunity to use the environmental area during Nature Patrol time. This is a time when the children complete nature based activities depending on the current season.
We know that learning is not only for school and will send home a termly homework activity grid to support you to provide engaging learning opportunities at home which we then enjoy sharing together as a class. These are only suggestions, so please bring in any home learning as we love to celebrate it all! We do encourage daily reading; reading is key! Your child will bring home a Read Write Inc book every Friday, this links to the text they are reading in class. They will also have the opportunity to change a colour band book as often as they like; we aim for daily! Weekly spellings and maths challenges will be sent home and checked on Thursdays.
We are very happy to see you about any questions or concerns you may have at any time during the year. Please feel free to either talk to us at the end of the day or make an appointment if you would like to talk in more detail.
