Governing Body

The Role of the Local Governing Body

Governors play an important part in overseeing the running of the school. We are here to ensure the school meets its statutory obligations and to provide the strategic overview. The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher and staff. Our role is to act as a critical friend, supporting leaders and holding them to account for the performance of the school.

The governing body has three key functions:
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

What does this look like in practice?

All governors are volunteers.  We meet at least once every half term and visit the school regularly. Governors monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. In action, this means:
  • Visiting the school regularly to monitor aspects of the school improvement plan
  • Reviewing data, for example relating to pupil outcomes and attendance
  • Monitoring the provision for groups of pupils, including those who are disadvantaged and those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities
  • Overseeing safeguarding, behaviour and extra-curricular opportunities
  • Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the school community
  • Agreeing budgets and monitoring the premises
