Welcome to Year 5 at Billingshurst Primary School!
The staff in Year 5 are Mr Griffiths (Year Leader) in Cambodia class,
Mrs Bracknell in Nepal class and Mrs Gregory in Maldives class.
We are supported by our fantastic Teaching Assistant Mrs Hiley.
We are excited about this year's curriculum and have some wonderful topics throughout Year 5. We start our year with a topic called Visitors, which is led by the amazing book, 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan.
We will focus on time and space in which we find out about space and the wonders of the solar system. The children will have an opportunity to discover more with a visit from Kevin Monk, with his Virtual reality show about the stars.
In the Spring term, our topic is Incredible Invaders. The children will study the Angle-Saxon settlement of Britain and how this was affected by Viking raiders. We are planning a trip to Butser Ancient Farm to discover about life in the Anglo Saxon and Viking period.
The focus of the Summer term will be Living Things and their
Habitats, supported by the text, The Last Wild by Piers Torday.
A trip of visit will also be arranged to support the children's
We encourage participation in homework by providing interesting and engaging challenges of the pupils to complete and bring to school, with merits given for their effort. We also encourage reading by providing a reading journal for children to record their achievements in interesting ways. We visit the school library weekly and have extensive class libraries for the children to use. Times tables are still a priority and fast recall of these number facts will help with confidence in maths lessons. Children will be tested on Year 3 and 4 spelling lists, going on to familiarise themselves with the Year 5 and 6 words.
The Year 5 teachers are happy to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have, and are available every day after school in the playground, or please make an appointment if required.
The Year 5 team are excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with you and your children to make it an enjoyable and memorable year.
